Our Story

The first PetPeople store opened in San Diego in 1990. From the beginning, we knew that we wanted to be a local, family-owned operation. We still are today.

In our early days, the national pet supply chains were opening hundreds of stores around the country, and frankly we thought their stores lacked a soul. They were just big, boring, unfriendly boxes. They weren’t fun. Their people weren’t engaging. In our opinion they just didn’t get it. We had a few different ideas about how a pet food & supply store should function.

PetPeople has never sold pets. It’s not that we don’t love all furry animals it’s just that we were more interested in helping people take care of their pets than selling pets to them.

Our customers, from the very beginning were our best consultants. We just listened to them. What products were our customers looking for? What food issues were they trying to solve?

We found out very quickly that keeping up with our extremely informed customer base was a challenge. They knew what they wanted, and they wanted us to get it for them fast. We worked hard and got good at offering a unique and exciting product mix that was priced right.

We have always stocked pet foods that are considered to be premium or super-premium. To our delight, year after year we have seen creative companies continually come up with pet foods that are healthier and made from higher quality ingredients.

We carry large assortments of organic, frozen, raw, and natural dog and cat foods.

Our People

It’s kind of simple. You either are a pet person or you aren’t.

When you hang a sign on your store that says “PetPeople” you better be darn sure that the people working in your stores love pets.

Luckily the world is full of great people that love pets, and we are really proud of our store folks. Pets make us smile, love and laugh. We want our store's “attitude” to reflect that same fun and simple idea. Owning a pet is a love affair!
